CITY bosses will decide next week whether to put £2m behind a bid to build a performing arts centre in the North-East.
Northern Stage, one of the region's most respected theatre companies, has launched an £8m fundraising campaign to redevelop Newcastle Playhouse into a European Centre for the Performing Arts.
Next week, Newcastle City Council's cabinet will discuss whether to pledge the final £2m needed for the project to go ahead.
It is part of plans to create a cultural quarter around Newcastle University, along with the multi-million pound Great Museum of the North.
Steve Dunlop, the council's director of environment, enterprise and culture, is urging the cabinet to back the scheme.
