Former World boxing champion Barry McGuigan was singing the praises of Crook light welterweight professional boxer Nigel Wright after watching him win last weekend.
Wright out-pointed Jason Hall 59-56 at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow and McGuigan labelled Wright as "the most promising light welterweight in the country".
Wright had asked his promotors for a step up in class for his tenth professional fight and he got it in the shape of Hall, a former British and Inter-Continental championship challenger.
Hall was on the comeback trail after a chequered career, but the rugged west Londoner had a wealth of experience and had been sparring with the likes of Stevie Johnston.
Hall took the fight to Wright from the start, but found it hard to find a way past the high guard and tricky skills of the Crook boxer.
Hall took a lot out of himself as the majority of his punches failed to find the target and in the latter stages of the six-round contest Wright looked the stronger of the two fighters.
It was a gruelling, scrappy contest, but Wright had suffered a flu bug a fortnight before so he may not have been at his best.
Wright, 24, said: "I can do a lot better than that as I am only fighting to about 80 per cent of my ability."
Fight statistics

Frank Warren's Sports Network look likely to give Wright his first eight-round test in his next outing which could be early in the New Year as a prelude to a bid for a British title.
