HARD-working and talented students at Bishop Auckland College have been rewarded for their achieve- ments.

The college's annual awards ceremony was held last week to pay tribute to the efforts of students who have shone for non academic reasons or have gained high grades.

Student Catherine Lee, 24, from Coundon, was guest speaker at the night as college staff feel she is an inspirational student.

The former St John's RC Comprehensive pupil started the college in 1996 and has continued to upgrade her skills and qualifications in beauty therapy and body massage. She is now working towards a teaching qualification while working at a salon in Darlington.

Principal Joanna Tait said: "The evening is one of the most important events in the college calendar, which celebrates the tremendous amount of hard work and dedication made by our students".

Main winners on the night were:

Outstanding Group - the beauty therapy NVQ level 3 group; Outstanding Academic Achievement- Gemma Prest; Commitment to Study - Kevin Potts; Outstanding Community Learner - Michael Crow, and The Vi Handley Award for Caring and Consideration of Others - Stuart Lawton.
