Sunderland Scorpions' 100 per cent record in the women's premier league remain in tact after a 3-1 victory at Sheffield Shadows on Sunday.

Scorpions were caught out in the very first minute when Sheffield went ahead through Stephanie Turner.

Scorpions had to wait until 26.07 before they could muster an equaliser when some good attacking play was rewarded with a goal from Claire Oldfield.

Five minutes later Sunderland took the lead through Teresa Lewis and it was doubled in the 42nd minute when Oldfield scored her second of the game.

The result keeps Scorpions among the pace setters. They are next in action on Sunday when Slough Phantoms visit the Telewest Arena (face off, noon).

In the women's division one North Whitley Bay Squaws hosted Billingham Wildcats at Hillheads with the Tynesiders coming out narrow 3-2 winners. Wildcats' three-game winning streak came to an end and they went ahead through Jenny Carter at 06.02.

Squaws were level in less than two minutes through Charlotte Willey, but went behind for the second time when Vanessa Hill restored Wildcats' advantage at 12.09. The game, which was a closely fought contest, brought Squaws an equalising goal after 24 minutes from Sara Christie and five minutes later went ahead for the first time in the game thanks to a Becky Kasner goal.

Wildcats made limited attempts on Squaws' goal, but could not snatch an equaliser. Squaws gained their fourth successive victory to move joint top of the table alongside Telford Wrekin Raiders.

Wildcats: Jenny Carter, Vanessa Hill 1+0.

Whitley Braves suffered a 4-0 defeat at Nottingham Leopards in the English U19 North A League. Braves held out until the second period when Leopards scored twice and again twice in the final period.

Nottingham's netminder was former Billingham Bomber Michael Snook who is at Nottingham University and he faced 15 shots for his shut-out. Stephen Hoult in Braves' net faced 20 shots before making way for Kalvin Khass for the final 15 minutes and he faced two shots.

Blackburn Sparrowhawks and Whitley Arrows played out a 6-6 draw in the English U12 North A League match at Blackburn. A deserved point for Whitley which was their first point of the season. It was an end to end encounter between the bottom two sides in the league.

Sparrowhawks opened the scoring at 01.24 and doubled the lead on their only powerplay opportunity of the game. Whitley were level by the end of the first period with two goals in the final minute of the period from Matthew Sellars and Daniel Bentley.

Liam Brown gave Arrows the lead for the only time in the game at 26.09. Blackburn fought their way back to equalise four minutes later and went 6-3 ahead at 35.45 with three goals in as many minutes.

Whitley were not to give up and Brown struck his second of the game at 36.22 and two minutes later Harry Harley took Arrows to within one. Defeat for them was avoided with a dramatic game-tying goal with ten seconds to go with Brown striking his hat-trick marker.

Another close match between these sides after Blackburn won 12-10 at Hillheads earlier in the season for their only previous points of the season.

Arrows' netminder David Lawrence was his side's man of the match and made some outstanding saves to earn Whitley a point.

Whitley Tomahawks lost 7-2 at Hillheads in the English U16 North A League against Telford Rockets.

English National Hockey League North

Billingham Bombers suffered a 10-2 defeat at Ice Sheffield against Sheffield Scimitars. Bombers were under-strength, seven of the squad that defeated Grimsby Buffaloes were unavailable. Andrew Fletcher, Simon Hehir, Brian Perry, Scott Ward, Liam Telfer and Andrew Thornton all did not play and Ricky Box and Paul Smith were brought in. Steven V Johnson and Ian Richardson were also unavailable.

Sheffield, top of the table, went ahead at 01.45 and doubled the lead six minutes later. Billingham pulled a goal back on a delayed penalty in the 11th minute through Ricky Box and in the last minute of the opening period Paul Windridge was on hand to equalise.

Scimitars struck three times in the middle period as they restored their lead to 4-1, their fourth when short-handed. Two further goals short-handed in the first minute of the final period made it 6-1 and a seventh at 41.50 prompted Bombers to replace netminder Adam Flett with Richard Griffiths. Her was beaten at 44.21 on the powerplay and at 54.58 with Scimitars' fifth short-handed goal of the game. A victory that kept Sheffield at the top of the table.
