The Northern Echo's film website, Alternative Film, is helping to promote a one-night screening of the film Girl With a Pearl Earring.

The film is an historical drama telling the imagined story behind one of Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer's most famous paintings, The Girl With a Pearl Earring.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Tracy Chevalier, the historical drama follows Griet, a 16-year-old maid living in Vermeer's house.

The film stars Colin Firth as Vermeer, and Scarlett Johansson as Griet. It is directed by Peter Webber.

It has been praised by critics for its cinematography and faithful reproduction of life in Holland in the 17th Century.

The film will be screened in Middlesbrough on Wednesday, January 14, at 8.30pm and admission is by pass only, available through the website competition.

We also have 20 passes to the acclaimed drama/documentary Touching The Void.
