TOURISM chiefs are taking to the road to further promote their money-spinning industry.

Last year, tourism generated more than £42m for the Hambleton district.

Now the district council's tourist section is holding a series of roadshows to promote the industry and give an insight into how their tourist information service works.

Residents, accommodation providers, attraction operators and all tourism-related businesses are invited to the five events being held across the district.

"It is the first time we have taken our services out to the people," said tourism manager, David Shields.

"We hope it will provide not only the tourism operators but the general public with an insight into what Hambleton has to offer.

"Many local people think we are only here to attract visitors to the region, but our attractions and heritage should be as important to local people as they are to visitors."

The roadshows will be held on Mondays, beginning at the Lodge at Leeming Bar, Bedale, on January 19.

This will be followed by Easingwold Golf Club, on January 26, the Wainstones Hotel, Great Broughton, on February 2, Romanby Golf Club, Northallerton, on February 9, and the Golden Fleece Hotel, Thirsk, on February 23.

The roadshows all take place from 10am to 1pm.
