POLICE have released an e-fit of a conman who took a large amount of money after tricking his way into a pensioner's home.

The man knocked on several doors in the Bilton area of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, last week, offering to resurface drives or repairs roofs.

He was able to convince his victim that her drive needed to be done and, after quoting a price of £100, persuaded her to allow him into her home.

It was only when he had gone that she realised he had taken her purse and a large amount of cash she kept in the house.

The man, who was last seen walking in Bilton Lane towards The Gardeners Arms pub, was white, 5ft 6in, stocky, with brown or ginger hair and wearing a blue-green anorak.

Anyone who may be able to help trace him is asked to contact police on (01423) 539334.

The Northern Echo is spearheading a campaign, backed by both the police and trading standards departments to outlaw cold-calling by door-to-door cowboys.

A Private Members Bill, tabled by Tory MP Andrew Robathan and sponsored by Labour MP Paul Truswell, was given its first reading in the House of Commons earlier this month

In the meantime, the public are urged not to deal with strangers knocking at their doors but to stick to reputable dealers.

Police also advise homeowners to be sure they keep a chain on the door and to check the credentials of anyone who claims to represent the electricity, gas or water companies.
