WHEN Allan Green completed an entry form for an Age Concern prize draw in the autumn it was more to fill in time than a serious attempt to scoop the top prize.

Yesterday, the Richmond pensioner was at the branch of the charity where his wife, Lenora, works to collect his winnings after beating competition from 2,500 others.

"All you had to do was tick boxes to show which energy-saving devices you use around the home," he said.

"Apparently, my entry was first out of the hat, which was a pleasant surprise.''

Mr Green won a jacket for his hot water boiler, a jug kettle, a selection of energy-saving light bulbs and a device for detecting poisonous gases which can leak from faulty gas heaters.

"What we hoped the Winter Warmer competition would do is highlight methods of saving energy through the months,'' said spokeswoman Alex Bird. "It's great that, from all those entries, someone from Richmond should be among the winners."
