CRAIG RUSSELL has emerged as a target for Darlington's Third Division rivals Boston United.

The former Sunderland striker is training with Quakers and was last week registered as a player after offering his services to the cash-strapped club for free.

Russell came on as a second-half substitute in the 1-1 draw at Kidderminster at the weekend.

However, given Quakers' poor financial situation, Russell is unlikely to earn a permanent deal with the club.

He was released by Carlisle before Christmas and has been looking for a new club.

But the 29-year-old is keen to remain in the North-East, which could dent any hopes the Pilgrims have of landing the South Shields-born forward.

Boston boss Neil Thompson is in the market for a striker after Adam Boyd this week returned to Hartlepool after two months on loan at York Street.

Manager David Hodgson is keen to bolster his attacking options but loan moves remain his only viable option.

The Quakers boss is still hopeful of landing Sunderland striker Neil Teggart next week.

Russell could figure in Sunday's charity match at the Reynolds Arena.

The game has been organised by Hodgson to help raise funds for Quakers, who were put into administration before Christmas.

The first of two games kick off at 1pm. The current Darlington squad will play a celebrity XI, before the second match will see members of the Quakers squads that got to Wembley in 1996 and 2000 play another team of celebrities.

Among the stars already confirmed to play are Paul Gascoigne, Bryan Robson, Kenny Dalglish and Chris Waddle.

Tickets for the game went on sale from the Reynolds Arena ticket office yesterday. Adult tickets are £8 and concessions, £4. Disabled supporters and their helper will gain entry free of charge.

There are a limited amount of executive boxes available at £235. The package includes 10 tickets, programmes and refreshments.

Tickets for the Platinum Lounge are available for £15, although there are no meals available.

A special commemorative programme will be available to buy on the day, priced £1.50.
