The wet January hit the region's rivers again for the weekend fixtures and competitors on the Ure, Swale, Tees and Ouse had to work hard for a bite in the swollen conditions.

Biggest disappointment came during Bradford City's Open on their newly acquired Sandersons Farm stretch of the Ure around Lower Dunsforth.

Only two anglers connected with fish and typically on the raging waterway both slipped the hook.

Further upstream on the Ure, the Hutton Beckmouth to Hewick Bridge match length had dropped off for Sunday's 60 pegger Ripon Piscatorials Open.

Ryburn's Mike Walton weighed in the biggest bag of the day 15.12.0 of chub.

Pegged on the gravel bend in the willows, Mike literally came from nowhere to win.

Fishing the blockend feeder and maggot he'd only 1 chub in the net but in a dramatic final hour Mike quickly pulled out another 5 to ensure victory.

On the same section Tadcaster APA rod Gary Bullock found legered bread the favoured approach securing 4 chub totalling 9.12.0, 2 pegs away from the winner.

The leading four in the frame enjoyed some decent sport on the River Swale during the Idle and Thackley Open around Swainby and chub proved the mainstay.

In front came Darlington's Paul Tinkler who recorded 12.15.0 consisting of four chub as he legered cheese paste from the inviting looking slack swim, peg one on Swainby top bend.

Then Brotherton's Steve Evans landed three bigger chub for 11.2.0 all falling to legered wasp grub off the willows scar peg 16.

Moving to the Tees, Darlington's Dave Nicholson topped the latest DBT AA Grayling Cup fished between Croft to Coniscliffe netting 7.0.0 of grayling from an out of sorts river.

On the Coniscliffe stretch at peg 24 stickfloat down the edge brought 20 grayling switching between various hook baits.

On the Hud stream next best Darlington's Bobby Trees adopted identical tactics catching a smaller stamp of grayling for 6.6.0 at the scales.

The lower reaches of the Tees were coloured and flowing through with the barrage gates dropped and in Sunday's Stewart Meeham Memorial the reduced entry saw little action yet in an exciting finale 2ozs separated the leading pair.

Shotton MG rod Keith Jones on peg 142 above the Levenmouth took five chublets, three responding to feeder fished bread while the other two accepted maggot for a match clinching 4.14.8.

Diawa Cleveland's consistent Geoff Douglas slipped below as the groundbait feeder offering worm and maggot encouraged 4 chublets backed by roach and dace from peg 146.

For the latest round of the York Winter League competitors struggled on the Ouse suffering from an influx of snow water.

In the individual stakes Tang Hall's Phil Hodgson comfortably got ahead of the 80 rods with 6.10.0.

Drawing above Donkey Wood sandbeds on peg 55, Phil opted for a close in attack on the pole and worm extracting two bream before adding a few small roach to boost his net.

South Bank's Dave Taylor on the Kingfisher peg used pole and maggot to bring out roach and perch for 4.5.0 enough for second place on a difficult day.

Top three teams on the day: 1 Barlby Village Stores 8.6.0; 2 York Tackle 8.3.8; 3 South Bank 6.0.0.

League placings overall: 1 Barlby Village Stores 55; 2 South Bank 49; 3 Acomb 47; 4 Wibsey 46.

Ferryhill & District AC Grayling Cup Upper Swale at Catterick: 1 Tony Berry 3.12.0; 2 Geoff Richardson 1.14.0; 3 Geoff Brewer 1.12.0.

Carp Sport

Whizzo Oaks (Thurs) Sessay on Cedar Pool: 1 J Allerton (Tri Cast Oaks) 23.3.0; 2 K Mitchell (Selby) 21.12.0; 3 I Exley (Middy Team Dons) 21.0.0.

Weights were tight during Sunday's Oaks match on Cedar Lake and every fish crucial for success.

Map Elton's Steve Rothery worked the pole across to the island and also down the middle netting small carp to maggot for 34.13.0 off peg ten.

At the next peg and chasing the winner all the way Castleford's Andy Wadsworth returned 34.6.0 of carp with fish up to 2.0.0 feeding maggot down the middle.

Woodland Lakes: Wed - Curlew Kestrel Partridge Skylark & Wagtail (51 pegs): 1 J Allerton (Tri Cast Whizzo) 25.8.0; 2 T Pitts (Marsh Tackle) 17.7.0; 3 J Dale (Fryston AC) 15.8.0

Sat - Curlew Kestrel Mallard Partridge Skylark & Wagtail (57 pegs): 1 K Fryatt (Elton Tackle) 18.12.0; 2 I Grimshaw (Elton Tackle) 13.6.0; 3 P Riley (Boroughbridge Musketeers) 13.2.0.

There was an improvement in sport at the Woodland Lakes for Sunday's match and 60.0.0 was needed to win.

Big Waters man Scott Lister put together a mixture of carp barbel and skimmers off the island filled lake of Dragonfly.

Pole and corn pushed out to 14 metres delivered from peg three.

Carp were the order of the day for Quaker Tackle's Ken Gales who on Swallow 15 located all his fish towards the aerator for 31.0.0.

Trout news

An excellent week at Jubilee Lakes. New starter Stanhope's Stuart O'Dell landed the second largest rainbow trout ever from this fishery, catching on a humungus pattern fly tied by his brother. In a week when three other doubles including a brace of 14.11.0 and 14.6.0 were grassed by regular Paul Hull of Evenwood.

Rod average four fish. Best patterns bloodworm, cat's whisker and humungus.
