A MEDICAL expert is temporarily quitting the chilly climes of Teesside and jetting off to India.

But Carol Kraus's trip to Bombay, or Mumbai as it is now called, will be no holiday.

The senior physiotherapist with the Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust is travelling to Mumbai this month for 12 days as a volunteer for British Executive Services Overseas.

She will visit Swami Brahmanand Pratishthan Institution for Mentally Handicapped Children to help raise the standard of physiotherapy, enabling children to benefit from the most appropriate available therapies.

The centre, which is funded by the Prudential financial company, wants to become a centre of excellence and an example for similar projects.

Ms Kraus's role will be to provide advice about treatment, equipment, staff and facilities.

"I am looking forward to the visit to Mumbai. It will be an excellent experience for me and will help with my professional development,'' she said. "I'll also be able to share my experiences with colleagues on my return."
