A WEEK-LONG crackdown on city centre pavement parking begins today.

Northumbria Police and Newcastle City Council are mounting the blitz on motorists in the city centre.

Apart from causing access problems for pedestrians, the council estimates the cost of repairs as a result of pavement parking to be about £250,000 a year.

Extra officers will be used to tackle the problem, particularly where parked cars cause difficulties for other drivers and pedestrians.

They will work with police and traffic wardens to issue tickets to offending vehicles. The offence carries a £30 fine.
