WRITER Terry Deary hopes to build a £129m theme park based on his best-selling Horrible History children's books.

The park would create 4,225 direct and indirect jobs in one of the country's worst unemployment areas, South Tyneside.

The writer, one of Britain's favourite children's authors, is thrilled at the prospect of bringing his books to life.

He has approached South Tyneside Borough Council because of the area's Roman links and successful tourist attractions.

The council will commission a feasibility study and is looking at locations and plans. Its findings should be ready in June.

Mr Deary said: "This would be a history experience park, but it would use elements of Horrible Histories, as it would bring to life the gruesome and grotesque life of the past, just in the way that Horrible Histories does. It would be a multi-million project and would create jobs for actors and tourism and hotels.
