THE Government is being urged to help people lead a better life by providing portable oxygen cylinders on the NHS.
Members of Breathe Easy York, a charity which provides support for people with severe respiratory difficulties, have drawn up a 300-name petition.
It has been given to York MP Hugh Bayley who will present it to the House of Commons next week.
People with severe breathing problems have oxygen provided by the NHS in their homes, but the equipment and cylinders are bulky. Much smaller "ambulatory oxygen" cylinders are only available privately and cost about £850.
Charity chairman Anthony Wilson said: "A lot of people can't afford to pay £850, so that stops them getting out and about.
"They are often quite capable of walking around the house on their oxygen supply, and the only thing stopping them going out is the lack of equipment."
Mr Bayley said: "The Government initiated a review of oxygen services at home in March 2000. The review includes the possibility of providing ambulatory oxygen and looking at which technologies are best.
"It's time for them to announce their conclusions. People with severe breathing difficulties should not be trapped at home when they could be living a fuller life."
