A GROUP established a year ago to support parents with young families is continuing to flourish.

The SureStart initiative, for Shildon and the West Ward of Newton Aycliffe, now provides a range of activities for families with children under four.

Young mother Gillian Allen has been involved from the start of the initiative.

The 28-year-old, who lives in Pearl Street, Shildon, with her husband Kevin, heard about the initiative from her health visitor and soon became one of the six parent representatives for the group.

The parents have an equal say in all matters and have helped to set up some toddler groups in Shildon and Newton Aycliffe.

Mrs Allen has an 11-month-old son, Kieran, and a two-and-a-half year old daughter, Chloe.

She said being part of the group had proved to be a boon to her and her family.

She said: "Before I had children I worked full-time, so I didn't know many people in Shildon. This has got me out and helped me get to know a lot more people with children the same age as mine."

As well as the toddler groups, SureStart runs swimming sessions and messy play sessions. There are plans for outdoor play areas in Shildon and Newton Aycliffe, as well as children's centres in both towns.

SureStart members are now trained smoke cessation advisors, and there are plans to run numeracy and literacy courses for parents, so that they can help their children with homework.

Family link workers will soon be available to help mothers who might need assistance if they are having difficulties with babies.

Mrs Allen said: "As far as I'm concerned, the parents I've talked to rate it a fantastic success."

The initiative is about to expand to other areas in Newton Aycliffe. For more information, contact SureStart on (01388) 777613
