AFTER being on the receiving end of so many 1-0 scorelines recently, last Saturday's single-goal victory over Rochdale made a very refreshing change for Darlington fans.

It looked like another battling performance by the Quakers, watched by an encouraging crowd of 5,689 at the Reynolds Arena, would yet again lack that vital ingredient of a goal.

But the team's efforts were finally rewarded when Chris Hughes cracked in the winner from an Ian Clark cross with nine minutes remaining.

It was no more than David Hodgson's men deserved and the three points dragged them closer to safety. They are now just one point behind third-bottom Southend, who have played one game fewer.

Quakers go into tomorrow's game at Huddersfield Town with renewed hope, but they face a team chasing hard for promotion in fifth place with only one home defeat this season.

Huddersfield have lost their leading scorer Jonathan Stead, who signed for Blackurn Rovers this week, and Hodgson will be hoping his own star striker, Barry Conlon, can rediscover his scoring touch.

The manager is still hoping to increase his attacking options by bringing in Sunderland striker Neil Teggart on loan before tomorrow's game.

The move has been agreed in principle, but it hinges on Hodgson persuading Fabian Bossy to leave the club. Clubs in administration are only allowed a squad of 20 players and Teggart cannot come in unless someone else leaves.
