CALLS were made today for the resignation of a police chief after a near-£7m black hole was discovered in a force's budget.

Cleveland Police Authority announced it is having to "urgently reconsider" its financial plans for the coming year after uncovering details of the shortfall.

Authority chairman Ken Walker said it would be "unacceptable, improper and irresponsible" to continue with the force's spending plans.

But Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP Ashok Kumar called for Coun Walker to resign and Home Secretary David Blunkett to intervene.
