Burness Plate group three: Dormans 4, Whinney Banks 1; The only game to beat the weather was a second division group three Burness Plate match.

Dormans found their pitch unplayable and swapped grounds to Acklam Sports Centre where they entertained Whinney Banks who are second from bottom of the League. After only two minutes Lee Doherty was upended in the penalty box, he got up of the floor and knocked home his third of the season from the spot, this was the only goal of the first half. Five minutes into the second half, James McGowan increased the home side's lead to 2-0, the visitors then pushed forward looking for away back into the match but with quarter of an hour to go Dormans broke clear and McGowan with his second of the match and 17th of the season made it 3-0, five minutes later James Mellon with his 2nd of the season gave the Dormans an unassailable 4-0 lead before David Gove scored a last minute consolation for Whinney Banks.

Dormans now lead the Group Three mini-league table with two win from two, Whinney Banks are second in the table with a win, against Darlington RA Reserves and this defeat, Darlington RA Reserves have only played the one game as have Darlington Albion who were well beaten by Dormans last week.

In the Group Two of the mini-league Burness Plate, Billingham Wanderers top the group following their 5-3 win over Guisborough Town Reserves, Teesside Athletic are second after a 4-3 win over Guisborough Town Reserves, North Ormesby who make up the rest of the group have yet to play in this competition, Guisborough Town Reserves prop up the rest of the group.

The Group One mini-league consists of Darlington Cleveland Bridge, Darlington SRM, Richmond Mavericks and Teesside Link, as yet no matches have been played, Darlington CB and Richmond Mavericks are now lagging behind every other second division team in matches played, and will have to face each other in the Darlington Charity Cup in March.

* The postponement of a number of cup matches has resulted in the rescheduling of February's fixtures.

Round-up

The First Division Championship race could be won by any of six and possibly seven teams, current leaders Thornaby lead the second placed team by four points, having played a game more. They still have the six teams behind them to play starting tomorrow with a local derby with Thornaby Youth Club; they also meet them in the quarterfinals of the MacMillan Bowl, and in the newly introduced Lou Moore Shield, which will be played for in a mini-league format of five teams in three groups.

Carlin How are second in the League four points behind the leaders, but with a game in hand, they also have the other six teams to play involved in the race and they host Grangetown Boys Club in the quarter-final of the MacMillan Bowl, their Senior Cup match against Middlesbrough U17's was postponed last weekend, and hopefully it will be arranged for this coming Saturday.

League Champions Grangetown Boys Club are in third place, eight points behind Thornaby, four behind Carlin How, they have a game in hand on the leaders and have five of the top seven to play.

Thornaby Youth Club are in fourth place a point behind Grangetown, with two games in hand on their local rivals Thornaby, one in hand on the two above them. They only have Grangetown, Hartlepool and local rivals Thornaby to play in the league and Thornaby in the MacMillan Bowl.

Hartlepool are in fifth place on 34 points, with three games in hand on the leaders, and two on the second and third placed teams, one in hand on Thornaby Youth Club who they are level on points with. They have Carlin How, Grangetown and both Thornaby teams to play, they face a tough match in the Semi-Final of the Durham Trophy when they travel to Durham Alliance side Coxhoe Athletic, who are the current leaders of that league.

Middlesbrough side BEADS FC are also on 34 points, but have played 20 matches, they may be one of the two outsiders for the Championship, but will have the chance to be influential in where it could be heading as they have Carlin How, Grangetown, Hartlepool and leaders Thornaby to play, as well as the team immediately below them Wolviston Reserves.

Wolviston Reserves are in seventh place on 31 points and the second outsider, they have completed 20 matches, but only have BEADS, Carlin How and leaders Thornaby to play, they again could be influential in where the Championship heads to.

Bedale are in mid table on 28 points, they may not be in the fight for a top two, but with BEADS, Grangetown, Hartlepool and Thornaby Youth Club to play will try and influence the out come. They also can have a big say in the relegation fight as they have to play the bottom four yet to play.

Richmond Town are another mid table side who on their day can beat the best, they have BEADS, Carlin How and Thornaby Youth Club to play at the top of the table and New Marske, SMG Redstripes and Stokesley to play at the bottom of the table.

Nunthorpe Athletic in recent weeks have pulled themselves out of the relegation fight and are gradually improving, they still have Carlin How, Grangetown and Hartlepool yet to play at the top end and SMG Redstripes and Stokesley at the other end to play, they also have an outstanding R T Raine Trophy to play against Mackinaly Park.

Whitby side Fishburn Park are by their standards having a poor season, just out of the relegation battle, they slipped to a surprise defeat by second division Darlington SRM in the MacMillan Bowl, they have Carlin How and both Thornaby teams to play at the top of the table and Mackinlay Park, New Marske and Stokesley to play at the bottom of the table.

SMG Redstripes are in twelfth place and may be just out of the relegation dog fight on 18 points, they have BEADS, Hartlepool who they were promoted with last season, and Wolviston to play, but to keep clear of the relegation dog fight must get results against Mackinlay Park, New Marske and Stokesley.

Mackinlay Park have twice as many points as the bottom club New Marske, they could be influential in the top of the table fight with Carlin How, Hartlepool both Thornaby teams and Wolviston to play, they would want to pick up points in their more important fight against relegation, with games against SMG Redstripes and a six pointer against New Marske, they also have an outstanding R T Raine Trophy match against Nunthorpe to play at the end of the month.

New Marske are bottom on seven points, they would have had ten but lost three for failing to play a match, they have played eighteen matches, they have had three consecutive matches postponed up to last week, when they switched to their opponents to play the match, but lost. To have the chance of avoiding the drop, they must take points of the other teams around them, but they only have Mackinlay Park and SMG Redstripes yet to play.

The race for promotion to the First Division seems to be a two horse race, current leaders Dormans have 39 points on the board, with eight matches to play, they still have second place Richmond Mavericks to play who are 9 points behind them having played the same number of matches. The pair clash at Dormans this coming Saturday when they meet in the North Riding Challenge Cup, Richmond Mavericks are the holders.

Dormans must be firm favourites as they only have their league match and R T Raine Trophy and Burness Plate to compete in. Mavericks have a possible semi-final of the County Cup to play, against Stokesley of the Wearside League, an outstanding R T Raine Trophy to play as well as a Dales Cup match against Bowes of the Wensledale League, which they competed in last season and a Darlington Charity Cup math against fellow league side Darlington Cleveland Bridge and six matches in the Burness Plate to play.

The Lou Moore First Division Memorial Shield
