Once again the atrocious weather conditions played havoc with the Overs-40s Cup and league fixtures with only one game being played out of 28 matches.

Division Four leaders Thornley Celtic won 1-0 at home to second from bottom club Wynyard Old Boys. The Old boys turned in a tremendous performance which made a mockery of their current League position and could have won the game had they put away their chances. The first half saw end to end football with both sides going close and finished goalless. The restart followed a similar pattern but with the home side having a slight edge and the Old Boys keeper Derek Talbot had to make three spectacular saves to prevent them scoring. The deadlock was broken when Ronnie Stokesley took a free kick about 30 yards out and hammered it into the top left hand corner of the net and put Thornley 1-0 up. In the closing stages the Old Boys pushed all forward but Thornley's defence was rock solid and the equalising goal never looked like coming. For Thornley Paul Summerson, Tony Pyle and Billy O'Neill were outstanding and keeper Derek Talbot shone for the visitors.

The unwanted postponement of both League and Cup matches over the last three weeks has created a back lot of fixtures which means midweek night matches will be necessary at the back end of the season for the majority of the clubs. In the Premier League the Lord Seaham are well behind in their league programme and a Cup run would further complicate matters. Holywell Fat Ox are, also behind and are still in three Cups, the Villa Real, the Robson-Pattison and the Kenny Ball Cup just to make it difficult for them.

But it is still early days and it will only be late on in the season when the real difficulties will surface.
