RISING Newcastle United starlet Michael Chopra completed a month's loan to Nottingham Forest last night and then urged Sir Bobby Robson: 'Don't forget about me'.

Robson drafted in Leeds striker Michael Bridges on a three-month deal on Monday to provide competition for a place alongside skipper Alan Shearer in attack.

Craig Bellamy and Shola Ameobi are also ahead of Chopra in the queue for a starting place and Newcastle are known to have tried hard to acquire the services of Celtic front-man Henrik Larsson.

Now Chopra, whose only League start for the club came in December's 1-0 home defeat against Blackburn, has been farmed out on loan to Forest.

But the 20-year-old has ruled out a permanent move and wants to use the temporary switch to convince Robson that he is capable of playing in the Premiership at St. James' Park.

"I am pleased to have signed for Forest because with Michael Bridges joining I have gone further down the pecking order," Chopra told Northern Echo SPORT.

"When I played for the first team against Blackburn I thought I had done alright but then I was left out the next game and I wondered what happened. But now I just want to get my head down again and work hard.

"I want to play my football up at Newcastle and I will be aiming to start all over again next season.

"The manager has wished me all the best and I aim to prove to him what I can do by doing well at Forest."

Last season Chopra had a similar spell in Division One when he scored five goals in as many games - four of which came in a 7-4 thriller against Burnley.

Forest boss Paul Hart moved for the young forward after attempts to take Wolves' Nathan Blake broke down over personal terms.

And the Under-21 international - tipped to eventually become the first Asian to represent the senior England team - insists his time at the City Ground, where Jermaine Jenas started his career, should help him to take his career onto the next step.

"It is similar to what happened with me at Watford last year when I went out on loan," said Newcastle-born Chopra. "I just have to try to make the most of it and get more experience under my belt.

"Going to a different club really helps you and it brings you down to earth. It's a reality that things can change in football quickly and I just want to do my best while I'm there."

Newcastle target Larsson has not ruled out making a move to Tyneside, although he does admit that he would prefer to play his football in a sunnier climate.

The Swede's agent, Rob Jansen, was quoted earlier this week as saying that his player did not want to see out the remainder of his career in England, effectively scuppering Newcastle's hopes of signing him on a free transfer in the summer.

Barcelona were said to be favourites for Larsson's signature, but the 32-year-old said: "I'd like to go to Spain or somewhere where it's warm - not for a holiday but to play and enjoy my football.

"It would be lovely to play in a warm climate but I wouldn't shut my door on the Premiership. I will have to wait and see what comes up. I haven't made a decision yet.

"Apparently, I have signed for Newcastle as well as Real Mallorca. But I still live in Glasgow.

"I haven't signed anywhere or had any discussions with anybody, but I'm not in a hurry. I am fully focused on Celtic."
