A GIRLS' Saturday football league that amazed everyone with its success is to kick off again this summer.

Last October Durham County Council and Durham Football Association set up the county's first girls' and women's mini football leagues on a Saturday and it was a runaway success. The number of teams taking part more than trebled, from 15 to 50. Now the league will run again, from March until July.

John Topping, secretary of Durham FA, said: "It's amazing. It's been a great success and very worthwhile. We can only see it getting bigger and bigger. We're looking for a third venue and we're going to split the leagues for the under-10s and under-12s into a premier and first division."

Almost 200 players were involved in the leagues in October at East Durham and Houghall Community College in Peterlee and at the Riverside in Chester-le-Street.

Coun Brian Walker, the county council's cabinet member for business support, said: "I think we've all been a little surprised at the speed at which the leagues have grown."
