Tow Law Scottish Courage League

Tow Law Station produced the win of the season when they visited Tow Law Dan's Castle B and only dropped one point, when Anthony Lee won his singles. The visiting winners in the singles were Christopher Reed, Wayne Tennant, Neil Morrallee, Malcolm Boughey and David Fernandez, who upset David Murray's move to taking the Player of the Year title. David's defeat means that he must win one of his two remaining games to guarantee landing the title.

The Station followed up their singles successes by taking all three doubles to win 8-1.

The title is still undecided with three matches remaining because Tow Law Dan's Castle A and Sunniside Comedian are level, 18 points clear of Tow Law Football Club with Newhouse Club a further five points adrift.

The postponed matches from the past week have caused the league to be extended by one week. These postponed matches will now be played on Wednesday, February 18. This will cause all the competition dates to be moved back one week. The next league meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 17 at 8pm in Tow Law Station when all teams must be represented.

County Super League

Durham made an excellent start to the new season when they recovered at home against Horden, last season's runners-up, from looking certain to lose to going to victory by taking the last five frames.

Horden went into a first half lead with wins from Darren Jones, Shaun Williams, Paul Hickman and John Bourne, who made an eight ball clearance. The home points came from Helen Littlewood, Barry Dowson and Paul Shutt, who also made an eight ball clearance. Shaun Williams and Ged Evans took the first two points of the second half for Horden but then Helen Littlewood started the Durham recovery, which was maintained by Paul Shutt, Barry Dowson, Dave Ferguson and Chris Bowran.

Crook B made a good home win over a strong Shildon A team, but the visitors did well to take the final three frames in a good damage limitation exercise.

Only Kevin Stewart and Rance Richardson scored for the visitors in the first round of matches, whilst Crook had wins from Johnny Mason, Gerald Parkin, Darren Tinkler, Cliff Owens and Lee Cullinan.

The home side then took the first four points of the second half through Johnny Mason, Gerald Parkin, Darren Tinkler and David Stephenson. Shildon's late revival came from Andrew Tennant, Rance Richardson and Martin Taylor.

Spennymoor, the reigning champions, look to be the team to beat for anyone with hope of landing the Championship. On their visit to Newton Aycliffe the Moors only dropped three points when Tommy Francis, Richard Bellwood and Steve Thompson won.

The Moors points came from Steve Hunter, Richard Turner, Ronnie McAloon and Paul Biddle with two each, whilst Dave Elliott, Gavin Witton and Dave Bromley added one each.

Willington Brewer's Droop played one of their three outstanding fixtures against the visiting Willington Cottles A and completely commanded the match. Only Andrew Fleming managed to take a singles point for Cottles, whilst the Brewer's had singles wins from Steve Smith, Alan Rickaby, Keith Harris, Jimmy Fleming and Bill Wragg, before they completed a good night by taking all three doubles points.

Sunnybrow Brown Trout have won the Championship but a play-off between Byers Green Royal Oak and Willington Cottles will be needed to decide the runners-up.

Auckland Area League

Ithe second round of the Team Knockout Cup Spennymoor Voltigeur A visited Bishop Auckland Manor. The visitors got off to the better start with Dean Mains taking the first game and, after Steven Webb had levelled the score, Darren Briggs and David Graham made it 3-1 to the Volti. The home side's Jon Tomlinson and Bill Turner levelled the score but three in-a-row from Kelvin Anderson, Andy Mole and Dean Mains put the visitors one point from victory. Ron Wright took the final singles game and combined with Bill Turner to take the first doubles to get within one point of their opponents but, as a comeback looked likely, Darren Briggs and David Graham won the second doubles game to give the Voltigeur a 7-5 victory.

Crook Individual League

The new season of the league, which is being dedicated to the memory of Alan Moses, began in Crook Coach and Horse with the four top players from last season in action. In the four matches played, only former runner-up, Michael Burke ran into problems when he played Darren Tinkler. With the score level Tinkler potted all his balls but snookered himself on the black, which he missed and Burke took advantage to win by the odd point.

Reigning champion, David Craggs whitewashed Doug Bowey in a scrappy match, whilst third placed, Johnny Mason twice cleared all his balls from the break but snookered himself on the black only to recover in both to beat Stephen Burke.

David Haygarth whitewashed Lee Cullinan in a scrappy affair, Cullinan's best chance went as he tried for a clearance but snookered himself on his penultimate ball and Haygarth cleared.

Matches on Monday night in the Crook Coach and Horses are: Neil Campbell v Aaron Cowan; David Stephenson v Gerald Parkin; Lee Scott v Richard Walker and Stephen Heyes v Les Scott.
