Billingham Wolves and Sheffield Steelhawks shared the spoils from a 4-4 draw in their English Under-19 North A League at the Forum Ice Arena.

Wolves had the better of the first period, but only had a single goal for their efforts which came from Robert Dowd after five minutes.

The middle period saw Sheffield on top and the period brought four goals which all came on the powerplay. Five powerplay opportunities brought four conversions, the first at 29.35 which Liam Telfer doubled Wolves advantage to 2-0.

Sheffield hit back with two goals in four minutes to level the match at 2-2 after 36 minutes. There was still enough time for Stuart Gibbon to restore Billingham's lead in the final minute of the period.

Gibbon scored his second on the powerplay five minutes into the final period to give Wolves a 4-2 lead. Steelhawks kept battling away and they cut the deficit to one at 54.12. Time was running out and Steelhawks had a player sent to the dressing room for butt-ending when they tied the scores at 58.28.

Sunderland Arrows met Kingston Crunch at Hull Ice Arena in an English Under-16 North A League match and went down 5-2. Kingston in third place went ahead at 03.08 and added a second on the powerplay 76 seconds later.

Arrows opened their account at 11.07 with a goal from Mark Robson and only 21 seconds later Kingston restored their two-goal advantage. A fourth Crunch goal came in the 13th minute for a 4-1 first period lead.

A second Sunderland goal came two minutes into the middle session from Ben Connon. Arrows kept battling away but could not find a further goal. Kingston struck a fifth in the 40th minute.

Sunderland Mohicans were involved in a closely contested English Under-14 B League match away to Flintshire Hurricanes. The only goal of the first period went Flintshire's way in the 90th minute.

Callum Davies equalised for Mohicans at 16.08 on the powerplay only to see the home team regain their lead at 17.48. Davies tucked away his second also on the powerplay at 24.39.

Flintshire's winning goal came with three minutes remaining to take both points in a 3-2 victory.

Billingham Pumas were at Flintshire Flyers in English Under-12 North B League and were second best in a 6-3 loss. It was Pumas' first defeat of the season and Flyers went ahead at 04.48 before doubling the lead five minutes later on the powerplay.

Pumas' first goal came in the first minute of the second period with a Robert Heale strike. Two goals in five minutes from Flyers put them 4-1 ahead after two periods.

A fifth followed on the powerplay early in the final session. Pumas battled away and James Moss and Heale at 36.27 and 43.03 respectively put Pumas 3-5 being. Flintshire completed the scoring with a sixth in the final minute.

Whitley Arrows hosted unbeaten league leaders Sheffield Lasers at Hillheads in the English U12 North A League.

Lasers, with a 100 per cent record, went ahead in the first minute and were leading 5-0 after the first period and 9-0 at the end of the second. There was a further eight goals in the third for a 17-0 victory.

Sheffield had 43 shots on goal while Whitley had just seven on Lasers' goal.

English National Hockey League North

Billingham Bombers defeated Nottingham Lions 5-2 at the Forum Ice Arena which reversed a 6-3 loss in the Lace City three weeks previously.

Lions had the better of the opening period which they ended 1-0 after scoring a powerplay goal at 18.06.

Bombers had a great middle period scoring four unanswered for a 4-1 lead. Paul Windridge levelled the scores a minute into the second period and two goals 17 seconds apart in the 29th minute from Robert Dowd and Martin Lewis struck for Bombers. Lewis hit his second goal of the game four minutes from the end of the period.

Former Billingham netminder Michael Snook was beaten again in the Lions' net at 48.46 from a Simon Hehir strike. Snook was being kept busy facing 59 shots during the game. Nottingham scored a late consolation in the 57th minute.

Whitley Warriors were beaten 12-4 at Flintshire Freeze on Sunday. Freeze's victory took them to the top of the table. Flintshire's dangermen were Mark Stokes and Alan Hough who both hit hat-tricks.

Flintshire led 6-0 before Whitley lost Robert Wilson on a match penalty and added a seventh seeon afterwards. Adrian Huggins struck Whitley's first reply before the middle period had ended.

Ben Campbell, Bryan Dunn and Shaun Kippin were on target for Warriors in the final period. Flintshire struck five during the final period.

A women's Northern Conference squad faced a women's team Wales squad at Nottingham ice Arena on Sunday. The North-East had seven players in the North squad with Sunderland Scorpions providing Bev Hutchinson, Heather McDermott, Gemma Rolt and Jane Price. Billingham Wildcats' Stephanie Box and Whitley Bay Squaws' Sarah Smith as well as Billingham-based Vicki Wallace, who plays for Kingston Diamonds.

Team Wales won 3-0 with all the goals coming in a three-minute spell in the first period.

Cleveland Comets lost 15-5 at Nottingham North Stars in a recreation game. Comets iced just nine skaters which included four guest players as a bus bringing down the Comets broke down on route.

Tony Boynton and a Tim Kirk brace in the opening period saw Comets trail 3-4 after 20 minutes. Craig Littlefair and Glen O'Connor struck in the second and third period respectively.
