A HIGH-FLYING exhibition of home-made kites has taken off at Kirkleatham Museum.
Kelvin Woods, from Brotton, a Corus technologist, made the 36 kites, which range from 500 millimetres square to 5m by 2.5m.
This is the first time Mr Woods has held an exhibition. He said: "I've been fascinated by kites since I was seven or eight, when I made a kite with my dad. Now I'm mainly interested in the type called war kite, designed by Samuel Cody. He was involved in the race for aviation with the Wright Brothers and there's a whole series of these kites."
Museum curator Alan Pearce said: "Kelvin's kites are very impressive. The exhibition has an air of excitement. I can see Redcar's beaches full of children trying out their self-made kites after the workshops."
Weather permitting, Mr Woods, who has two children, will be giving outdoor demonstrations during the exhibition's two-month stay at the museum.
A workshop for making and flying kites takes place on Wednesday, February 18.
