OLD Shildon were the first team to qualify for a cup final last week when they beat Lakeside in the Division One Cup.

Both sides struggled to play any football on a quagmire Lakeside pitch, but it was the home side who were quick out the traps, taking an early two-goal lead with strikes by Wayne Marram and Marc De Lucia.

However, Old Shildon soon got into their stride and blitzed Lakeside in a hectic, 20-minute first half spell.

Ian Maddison (2), Thomas Louden, Kevin Russell, Paul Whensley and James Hedley did the damage.

Lakeside restored a little pride after the break when they conceded just one goal (a second by Thomas Louden) and scored two through Marram and De Lucia again.

"I thought we battled well," said Lakeside boss Stuart Hodgson. "We were the better side in the first 20 minutes, then they won the game in the last 20 minutes of the first half. We showed great battling qualities in the second half and dominated in periods, but we needed goals and we couldn't convert our possession into goals."

Shildon boss Gavin Holmes said: "The pitch made it very hard for both sides, but I thought Lakeside coped well and played some good football. We were slow starting but once we got out of bed I thought we played very well - the best we have for a few weeks."

Newton Aycliffe's semi-final tie against Green Tree was postponed, as were Division One league ties Salvins v Binchester Social Club and Horndale v Beehive.

Meanwhile, there was only one game played in the Division Two programme and it saw Victoria record a surprise 3-1 win at Belvedere thanks to goals by Adam Cunningham (2) and Marc Nelson.

"I think we deserved to win," said scorer Nelson. "It was very scrappy but we created a lot of chances and could have scored more."

Belvedere secretary Karl Thompson said: "It was a fairly very even and were probably only beaten due to two red cards. But they took their chances when they came along and on that alone deserved to win." Adrian Brown scored Belvedere's goal.

The postponed games were: North Briton v Grand, Cumby Arms v Eldon Arms, Hunwick v Middlestone Moor, Voltigeur v Boot & Shoe.
