Pete Wilkin has had an outstanding season in the North East Cyclo Cross League, and won the event at Mowden, Darlington, beating the ex-NE Champion, Alan Nixon, by two minutes.

In the O45 National Championships at Sutton Park, Birmingham, Pete collected a Silver Medal, and finished eighth in the Combined Vets races. He was the winner of the O40 series of races, even though he only managed 14th in the final race. He came third in The National Inter-Counties Championships at Bolton, leading the North-East team to win the British Cycle Federation Gold Medal.

Five Harriers competed in the Eston Nab Nee Nocker Fell Race, which was won by Charles Stead of Northumberland Fell Runners in a Course Record time of 34.34 minutes. Alasdair Thorpe was the first Thirsk and Sowerby runner to finish, in 16th place in 44.17, Caroline Pollard 24th in 44.17, with Oliver Harrison 26th in 44.21 and Alan Wikeley 27th in 44.28. Ernie Huck came 35th in 45.28 and Steve Harrison 44th in 48.56. The men's team finished in an excellent 2nd place, and Caroline Pollard, leading in the veterans series of races, was the third lady to finish. A total of 74 runners completed the six mile course.

Ian Codling and Fiona Wilson competed in the aptly named Woodkirk Challenge 10k, in which one is going either steeply uphill or down, but rarely on the flat, and Ian came 162nd in 51.57 minutes and Fiona 169th in 52.20, out of a total of 252 finishers.

The next event in the Club Championship series is the Snake Lane 10 at Pocklington on February 22.

North of England senior indoor championships

Local athletes were among the medals in the North of England senior indoor championships at the EIS in Sheffield.

Suote Nyunanyo (Middlesbrough AC) making his debut as a senior took the bronze medal in the 60m hurdles clocking 8.5. Adam Al (Tees Univ), the North-East indoor high jump champion, cleared 2.05 to take the bronze medal. Peter Vickers (Middlesbrough AC), last year's junior silver medallist, was just edged out of the final of the 60m clocking 7.16. Elaine Smith, in her first competition of the season, cleared 5.37m in the long jump and finished seventh.
