ROWING rivals competed head-to-head for 24-hours, without leaving a popular student watering hole.

Boat club members from neighbouring Durham University colleges took part in the 24-hour sponsored static rowing challenge, using ergo machines which monitor the equivalent distance rowed.

More than 40 members of the boat clubs at Hatfield and University colleges took it in turns on the two static machines, lined up side-by-side in the downstairs lounge of The Varsity pub.

Other students from the two colleges, both near the Saddler Street premises, provided plenty of vocal support for the respective crew members.

Both crews were sponsored and the proceeds, when totalled, will be split, with half going to BBC's Children in Need appeal, and the rest to provide much-needed funds for the two boat clubs for the forthcoming rowing season.

The challenge was made by Hatfield College club captain Tim Venables to his University College counterpart Gareth Bellamy, with a traditional crossed oars ceremony at the Varsity.

The challenge began at 9pm last Tuesday until 9pm the following day.
