Wolviston took high-riding North Shields to a penalty shoot-out but it was the Robins who reached the third round of the Sunderland Shipowners' Cup.

The visitors led three times but on each occasion they were pegged back and following extra time the score was 3-3. In the ensuing drama, goalkeeper David Lanning saved the fourth spot kick taken by David Dowd.

Paul Hogg headed into his own net to give Wolviston an early lead but North Shields quickly levelled through Anthony Robson. Dowd made it 2-1 to the visitors on 51 minutes, taking advantage of hesitation in the home defence and Wolviston held the lead for 30 minutes.

It appeared they might hold out but with just nine minutes remaining, Stephen Hamil hammered the ball home following a free kick by Roy Gordon.

Eight minutes into extra time and Wolviston were again ahead, this time with an Andy Steele header but once more the Shieldsmen hit back with a penalty by David Little awarded for hands.

Shields then scored their first five penalties but Wolviston went out when Lanning saved Wolviston's fourth spot kick taken by Dowd.

Darlington RA quickly led through Paul Freary, whose tremendous 25-yard drive flew into the net but Birtley Town soon recovered and ended 4-1 winners.

Philip Makel levelled on 15 minutes and further goals followed from Wayne Booth, Craig McManus and Anthony Lynch.

Ferryhill Athletic produced a battling performance before going out to Windscale who were two goals up inside 15 minutes through Joe Shepherd and Kevin Law.

Lee Robinson failed with a penalty for Ferryhill and so too did Law but the action was mainly at the Windscale end in the late stages as the visitors dominated without reward.

Barnard Castle Glaxo produced their best performance of the season defeating Washington Nissan UK 9-3 in the league. Stuart Murray rifled four goals, Ross Murray clinched a hat-trick and Barry Raper and John Kerr added to the woes of Nissan who replied through Ian Dodd (2) and Stephen Bryan.

In contrast, goals were scarce at the International Stadium where only one was sufficient for Gateshead Reserves against Harton and Westoe. Simon Reay clinched Gateshead's tenth win of the season when he lobbed the goalkeeper from 25 yards in the 60th minute.

The South Tyneside derby between Boldon CA and Jarrow ended 1-1. Andrew College struck for the visitors in the first period and there were only three minutes left when Mark Williams converted a penalty.

Conditions were extremely difficult in North West Durham as Annfield Plain and Ryhope CW shared in a 2-2 draw. The Plain conceded two own goals but a brace from Chris Soulsby deservedly earned them a point.
