SCORES of North-East good causes have benefited from cash from the National Lottery.
The Awards for All programme yesterday announced there would be £517,542 for 130 community groups and charities in the region.
Pat Lowes, senior awards officer for Awards for All in the North-East, said: "When we talk to prospective applicants many of them are surprised that their group can apply for lottery money.
"The number of grants funded and the amount of money spent so far certainly indicates that Awards for All funding is making a big difference to people and their communities within the North East of England."
Groups to benefit include Tyneside Challenge, which provides sports and other activities for disabled young people across County Durham and Tyne and Wear. It received £2,000 for specialist ski equipment.
Redcar and Cleveland History and Heritage will receive £4,550 to hold a series of historic pageants celebrating the area's cultural heritage.
The North East of England Bengali Puja Association won £5,000 to carry out a feasibility study for opening a community centre.
Grants of between £500 and £5,000 are available through the scheme and groups do not have to be a registered charity to apply. Contact 0845 600 2040.
