PUPILS tied themselves in knots for a day to raise money for hospice patients.

The Meadows Special School, in Spennymoor, was one of 20 organisations that supported a sponsored Loud Tie Day in aid of the Butterwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland.

Year seven students organised events with the help of tutors Fay Murray and Diane Richardson. They gathered support by designing posters and calling a school meeting to publicise the event.

Stephen Trotter, from Willington, and Nathan Grimes, from Newton Aycliffe, both 12, organised the tie competition, which was won by Gemma Mullen, with Jade McKinnell second and John Bagnall third.

Stephen and Nathan, with Lee Allan, Stephen Waddington, and Jamie Miles, were taken on a tour of the building when they visited the hospice to present the £60 they collected to fundraiser Sylvia Stoneham.

The Loud Tie Day effort has so far raised £700.
