BROOMPARK Loves edged a thrilling B&A Trophy quarter-final clash with rivals Thorns.

The title-chasers drew 3-3 after extra-time, with Loves clinching a place in the last four with a dramatic shoot-out win.

Lee Atkinson and Anthony Stewart had given Thorns a 2-0 half-time lead, but Gary Hindmarsh grabbed two in the second half to draw Loves level before the end of the 90 minutes.

Gavin Wood then put them in front before Michael Oliver qualised for Thorns to set-up a nail-biting penalty shoot-out, which Loves won with their fifth spot-kick.

"It was a cracking game," said Loves boss David Jones. "It was a shame that one of us had to be knocked out through the lottery of a penalty shoot-out after such a good game of football. It was competitive, as it always it, but it was a good game and very enjoyable to watch."

Thorns boss Dave McWaters said: "It was a good game. We had the better of the first half, while they came back in the second, so I think we were even overall. It was just disappointing to go out on a shoot-out like that."

Meanwhile, Hunwick edged their quarter-final tie with Victoria after drawing 4-4 in normal time.

Paul Dawson scored the all-important, extra-time winner after Stephen Howe had scored four goals in normal time to rescue Hunwick. Victoria will have been disappointed after leading for the duration of the first half and most of the second. Jason Greenland (2), Christopher Jayne and James Smith were their goalscorers.

Hunwick's Aidan McCabe admitted: "We weren't at our best, but we've battled on and eventually won a place in the semi-finals, so we're pleased with that."

Loves have booked a semi-final tie at home to Masons Arms, while Hunwick travel to Old Shildon to battle for the final spot.

Old Shildon booked another semi-final place - they are already in the 1st Division Cup Final as well - when they won 10-1 at the Grand in the quarters of the League Cup.

Ian Maddison scored five for the comfortable winners, with Thomas Louden (2), Kevin Russell (2) and Kevin Wilson also on the scoresheet.

The semi-finals now consist of Tudhoe United, Loves, Thorns and Old Shildon.

In Division One league action last week, Browney beat Lakeside 2-0 with two stunning goals by Gary Webster and Steven Wallace.

"There wasn't a lot between us," admitted Browney's Terry Collins. "It was a good game and it was only two superb goals that was the difference between the sides."

Lakeside manager Stuart Hodgson said: "I couldn't fault the players. They gave their all and battled very well right to the final whistle. We have created some chances and not capitalised, but I wouldn't have said they were the better side - we were outdone by two superb goals that killed us off. But I'm not taking anything away from my players, I thought they played well."

Elsewhere, Salvins won 4-1 at Newton Aycliffe thanks to goals by Mark Nicholson (2), Kevin Dodds and Paul Jones.

Horndale and Beehive drew 2-2, with Wayne Pratt and Mark Silvester scoring for Horndale and Jeff Alderson and Tristan Delf for Beehive.

In Division Two, Belvedere continued their promotion push with a 6-2 win at Boot & Shoe, Adrian Brown (3), Tony O'Neil (2) and Timmy Hutchinson scoring the goals.

Leaders Masons Arms matched that with a 4-2 win at home to Eldon Arms.

Meanwhile, all finals will be played at Spennymoor United's Brewery Field ground.
