Cyclo-cross expert Shaun Snodden proved a winner on the road when he took the Tour of Derwent Reservoir race over a 102-kilometre course at Edmundbyers.

Snodden won the under-23 National Trophy cyclo-cross series for three consecutive seasons and was the British champion at that level last year before moving up to the full senior ranks.

The Chesterfield rider, who has been signed by the new Recycling-co-uk-MG Xpower team, was one of six riders who forged clear of the field just five kilometres into the Tyne Valley CC road race.

And he was still there at the finish where he outsprinted Manchester rival Neil Swithenbank (MK Cycles).

Richard Sutcliffe (York Cycleworks) came in just three seconds off the pace to take third place, with Steve Kenny (Bannatyne CRT) fourth as the two other riders in the original break were left trailing.

Darlington's Rick King, riding for the new Bannatyne team, was fastest by just three seconds in Teesdale CRC's sporting time trial, latest round of the Teesside CA points competition, over a 24.4-mile circuit based on Staindrop.

It was King's second win in successive years, but his time of 58min 43sec was only three seconds too good for York veteran Tony Stott (Science in Sport.com).

King had been 20 seconds down at the halfway stage but used a long tailwind section to full advantage and then put his road racing strength to good use on the difficult finish, sprinting the last half mile.

Without that, he would almost certainly have lost out to Stott and probably also to third placed Dave Lund (Bike Traks RT), who was just one second further back.

Steve Fullerton (Richmond and Darlington CC) was the only other rider inside an hour, taking fourth place with 59-31.

Ferryhill Wheelers trio Andrew Watson (1-02-10), Peter Rasmussen (1-02-25) and Mark Mather (1-02-50) collected the team award. Simon Baxter (Bike Traks RT) was the fastest junior in 1-04-22.

Nikki Willis (Bishop Auckland CC) lifted the women's prize. Her time of 1-14-20 too good for Janette Thomas of Ryton.
