ABOUT 80 people yesterday joined a charity walk that had not run since the foot-and-mouth outbreak.

The Derwent Valley Challenge Walk, organised by Consett Rotary Club, is from Shotley Bridge, near Consett, over the site of the town's former iron works to Edmundbyers.

Finishers were picked up by bus in Edmundbyers and taken back to Snods church hall, in Shotley Bridge, where they were presented with certificates.

One of the organisers, Brian Anderson, said: "While we will make a few hundred pounds for Rotary funds from the entrance fee, we know that many of those taking part were sponsored to raise money for all sorts of charities, and we hope that figure will reach £2,000."
