Jason Hammond says he can't stop smiling after making his comeback for New Marske against Barnard Castle Glaxo on Easter Monday.

The 27-year old played the last ten minutes after recovering from a serious motor-cycle accident in Greece last July.

"I was in a coma for two weeks and spent six weeks in a Greek hospital," he said. "It was an horrendous accident and my dad Doug came out for six weeks.

"I've got a steel rod between my elbow and shoulder blade and nerve damage means I have to wear a splint but even so, it is just so good to be able to play again."

And the striker enjoyed a double celebration by marking his return with a goal.

"I was only on the field a few minutes when I scored. It was a great feeling and even though I had another effort disallowed for offside, I have been on a high all week."

Hammond has been with New Marske for four seasons and has also played for Marske United in the Northern League.

Whilst Hammond was centre stage in the Easter Monday fixture with Barnard Castle Glaxo, New Marske also celebrated recording their biggest win for a long time.

They plundered 11 goals and Glaxo failed to manage one.

North Shields also celebrated on Monday when they came from behind to defeat Stokesley SC in the final of the Sunderland Shipowners' Cup.

The Teessiders were in the driving seat at the halfway stage when they led by a couple of goals but the Robins staged a rally to finish 3-2 ahead and now have their sights set on a league and cup double in what they hope will be their last season in the Wearside League.

Currently, they are a point behind leaders Birtley Town but have four games in hand and it appears the strongest challenge will come from Stokesley. They are nine points adrift of the Robins with an additional match to play.

In addition, Stokesley have a superior goals difference and the sides still have to play each other in what could be the deciding match.
