Newton Aycliffe won the first trophy of the season when they lifted the First Division Cup at Spennymoor United's Brewery Field ground last week.

Aycliffe beat Old Shildon 5-1 to clinch the cup - and Ben Stevens, son of Paul Stevens who tragically died earlier this year, went up to proudly lift the trophy.

Stuart Owens gave them a first half lead before Ian Maddison equalised from the spot just before half-time.

Strikers Dave Muir and Johnny Craig made it 3-1 before an own goal and another strike by Muir completed the win.

Manager Brian Scaife said: "I thought the lads were awesome. We were really up for it and you could see that we desperately wanted to win it, especially after the season we've had and for Ben.

"It was a special moment for us when he lifted the cup. It is definitely the best cup we've won - in terms of meaning - and something we'll cherish."

Meanwhile, Division Two side Masons Arms caused an upset when they knocked high-flying Broompark Loves out of the B&A Trophy.

Masons clinched their final tie with Old Shildon (to be played on Sunday, May 2) with goals by Ryan Murray and Stephen Fothergill.

Manager John Booth said: "The lads were fantastic and we're absolutely delighted. I don't think the scoreline was a true reflection, we could arguably have scored more goals. They had spells but I think we pretty much dominated throughout the game. I couldn't praise the players more highly - they stuck to their game plan and were superb."

In Division Two league action last week, promotion-chasing Grand were inspired by retired midfielder Shaun Ingledew.

With just 20 minutes remaining, and at 0-0, 48-year-old Ingledew was brought on as sub, set up the first goal for Grand and was inspirational in their eventual 3-0 victory over Shildon Athletic.

Dave Baglin said: "He was a stalwart in midfield. He's been retired for a year and he was superb - clearly hasn't lost it. And he didn't show his age either - looking pretty good at 48!"

Elsewhere, Billy Ward was on target for Voltigeur as they drew 1-1 with Eldon Arms, Michael Walker getting their goal.

The game between Hunwick and Cumby Arms was postponed.

Meanwhile, Voltigeur will play Masons Arms in the Division Two Cup Final at Spenny's Brewery Field this Sunday (April 25). The B&A Trophy Final between Old Shildon and Masons Arms will be played on Sunday May 2.

The League Cup Final between Thorns and Loves will be played at Brewery Field on Sunday, May 9.

* The next league meeting will be held at Browney WMC on Wednesday, May 5, 2004.

* The league's end-of-season presentation night will be held at Old Shildon WMC on Friday, June 5. Teams are reminded that they must inform the league of how many tickets they require at the next league meeting on May 5.
