VISITORS can have a peek behind the scenes at a North-East museum next week.

Community groups from the region will be transported in restored buses to the Beamish Museum, near Chester-le-Street, County Durham, for guided tours and a look at the Beamish Regional Museum Store.

The event, taking place next Friday, is part of the launch of Museum and Galleries Month in the region.

This year's theme is Travel and the Art of Travelling, celebrating several major milestones, including the 200th anniversary of the first steam engine, and more recently the tenth anniversary of Eurostar.

Many museums are taking part, with several offering free open days next month, including the Old Fulling Mill Museum of Archaeology, and Durham University Oriental Museum, both in Durham City.

The Military Vehicle Museum, in Newcastle, has an exhibition on May 15 and 16, when Territorial Army units from the region will display their vehicles and equipment alongside those of the past century.
