A 17-year-old was the only unbeaten player in the top division of the League this season.

Adam Nowakowski, who plays for Harrogate Squash Club and is a member of the sport's national junior squad, won all 11 matches.

And his progress over the past season was underscored by the fact that he defeated rivals who had inflicted defeats on him the season before.

Adam, a student at St John Fisher High School in Harrogate, reckons his best win of the season in the First Division was his 3-0 victory over Mike Dickens, a student at Hallamshire University in Sheffield. Dickens skippers the Chapel Allerton team who won the First Division title.

Harrogate face Chapel Allerton in an end of season team showdown at Harrogate on Monday, April 26. But it seems likely the Nowakowski-Dickens rivalary will not continue. Adam is scheduled to meet former Yorkshire Northern Counties League side boss Ian Cawthorne.

Adam's main sport was once soccer. He was a member of the Leeds United junior squad at Thorp Arch where he was a midfielder for a season before being released.

His father Tony, at 48 a remarkably fit player, represented England under 21 soccer side and scored their only goal in a 1-0 win over Scotland at Old Trafford. He also played for Everton.

Adam has been following in dad's squash footsteps for years and plays for Yorkshire's under-19 team, helping them to clinch the Inter County Championship this season.

The teenager could have played in the under-17s but had made such progress he was elevated to the higher age group.

Meanwhile Dickens appeared on 17 occasions in Division One, winning 16 of his clashes.

A notable female performance in the top flight came from Nicola Pratt who won six of her 17 appearances for Harrogate Squash Club.
