Trainer James Given and Michael Fenton were in double form at Doncaster yesterday with Telemachus and Nessen Dorma, but the Gainsborough trainer's delight was tempered by the news that one of his horses had injured George Duffield at Warwick.

Duffield, 57, was kicked when Burton Ash lashed out before the European Breeders Fund Primrose Maiden Fillies' Stakes. He was taken to hospital and his wife Ann, who trains at Constable Burton, near Middleham, dashed from Doncaster to see him.

It was later reported that Duffield had a badly broken rib and also fortunately a scan on his liver had shown no damage.

Given said: "I feel so sad about what has happened, we all live and work around horses but you feel responsible when one of your horses is involved.

"The filly has not done anything like that at home and it's a bugger of a thing to happen, as I say I just hope George is all right."

Given went on: "I had Telemachus in a mile and a quarter race at Chester on Thursday too, but we will run Crow Wood, who won today's race last year for us, in that."

Frankie Dettori is making a strong bid to lift the jockeys' champion he last won in 1995, and he made his Bank Holiday trip north pay off in double style with wins on Mystical Land and Duke Of Venice at Doncaster yesterday.

The popular Italian, who is the current leader, has ridden 31 winners in 2004, but only 28 of those count in the title race which is determined by winners during the Turf season which runs from March 25 to November 6.

Duke Of Venice, one of Godolphin's many Epsom Derby entries, made rather harder work of beating his three rivals than might have been expected in Doncaster Racecourse Sponsorship Club Conditions Stakes.

Duke Of Venice is also in the one mile St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, and trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: "He has been working good at home, but he will have needed the race.

"He will improve for the run and it will have given him confidence for the Listed races in the future - he is a bit nervous but he will learn from this."

Dettori was impressed with Mystical Land's performance in the National Festival Circus Is Here Today Novice Auction Stakes and believes that Royal Ascot could now be on the colt's agenda.

The winner is trained by John Gosden for Sheikh Mohammed, and Dettori said: "He is a real pro and he gave me a lovely feel going to the start. He is the type you are looking for at this stage to go to Royal Ascot and he will probably have one run before."

And, of Duke Of Venice, he added: "I was pleased with the way he settled, because he is very fiery, the second horse tested my fellow's fitness and he just tired in the closing stages."

David Nicholls and his wife Alex Greaves teamed up to win the Cannon Health Club Claiming Stakes with Pays D'Amour while Kevin Darley, fresh from his Classic success on Attraction in the 1,000 Guineas 24 hours earlier, brought Paul Cole's Dr Thong home in front in the 'Unicyclist" Maiden Stakes.

Apprentice Ryan Moore was suspended for three days (May 14-16) for careless riding on Panshir, and Graham Gibbons was suspended for one day (May 14) for a similar offence on Look Here's Carol.

l Mick Channon is praying the rain stays away to boost the prospects of Misternando in the totesport Chester Cup tomorrow.

The West Ilsley trainer is happy with the ground description of good to firm and does not want it to turn soft for the extended two-and-a-quarter-mile contest.

He said: ''That ground's brilliant at the moment, but if it goes really soft then I don't know if there's any point running Misternando. He will go on soft ground, but I don't know about it if it goes really soft.

''And he's drawn off the track as well. I know people say it doesn't mean a thing over two and a quarter miles, but it does round there.
