INVESTIGATORS are still examing a boat which mysteriously capsized, killing two anglers.

Yesterday, maritime officers and coastguards carried out a full preliminary examination of the motor cruiser which capsized half-a-mile out into the River Tees estuary off the South Gare breakwater, Redcar, on Sunday afternoon.

Peter Blount, 47, from Redcar, and Bernard Powell, from Stokesley, both died when their boat took on water after developing engine trouble. Londoner Peter Ridout, 20, who was with them, suffered a broken leg.

The men had been in the sea for between three and four hours before Mr Ridout's waving was spotted as he clung to the prow of the submerged craft.

It is not known why the boat took on water so quickly and capsized.

Mr Blount's mother yesterday told how he bravely tried to save Mr Powell, who kept being swept away from the boat.

She said she did not really know what happened to turn the fishing trip into tragedy.

She described her son as a caring person who liked to help others.
