JAZZ musician George Melly, poet John Hegley, politician Mo Mowlam and feminist Germaine Greer are the headline acts in a North-East theatre's summer programme.

The line-up for the Arc, in Stockton, was released yesterday.

Former Redcar MP and Northern Ireland Secretary Mo Mowlam will appear on Saturday for a public question-and-answer session.

Other acts to appear over the coming weeks include Germaine Greer, who wrote the feminist bible The Female Eunuch, on Friday, July 2; John Hegley, comic poet, on Friday, July 30; and international jazz star and raconteur George Melly, who will play with Digby Fairweather and his Half-Dozen, on Saturday, June 12.

Music and dance play a big part in the summer season programme. There will be jazz from the Sue Ferris Quintet; acoustic music from Eskimo and Martin Hughes, flamenco dancing from Jaleo Flamenco and Eagles tribute act B'Eagles among others.

Other highlights will be the Refugee Week extravaganza which will include poetry from the Bard of Barnsley, Ian McMillan; a play by local man Gordon Steel about Sunday league football, called Studs, and camp stand-up comedian Alan Carr.
