CRAIG LIDDLE believes defensive linchpin Joey Hutchinson has a vital role to play in the club's renaissance next season.

The 22-year-old has proved a shrewd signing since joining the club from Birmingham on a free transfer nine months ago.

He has played a major role in helping Quakers stave off the threat of relegation.

And having formed a solid partnership alongside Hutchinson and Matt Clarke, Liddle has first-hand knowledge of Joey's importance to the club.

Hutchinson, who has made 37 starts for Quakers, was suspended for Saturday's defeat at home to Swansea.

But with Liddle due to undergo a knee operation on Friday, Hutchinson will return to the line-up for the final game of the season at Scunthorpe on Saturday.

"We all know what Joey's about and I think we did miss him on Saturday," said Liddle.

"He has been outstanding for us this season and he's one player who will be massive for us next season."

Hutchinson's performances prompted a tentative enquiry from Second Division Swindon in January, but Quakers boss David Hodgson knocked back their approach.

Quakers aim to hold on to their prize assets, including Hutchinson, and Liddle: "It's important that we build for next season and players like Joey will help us push up in the League."

Liddle brought down the curtain on his season with his 300th game for the club against Swansea.

The former Middlesbrough defender is confident of returning in time for July when the squad re-assembles for their pre-season programme.

After the traumas of this season Liddle is looking forward to better times ahead.

"Everybody knows what's happened off the pitch and it hasn't been easy," said Liddle.

"We haven't had the resources to bring players in but the lads have pulled together and done brilliantly.

"The squad is only small but there is plenty of quality.

"We've shown we can compete against the teams at the top but we need to be doing that on a more regular basis.

"If we can put that right next season, there's every chance we'll do very well."
