POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an unprovoked assault on a 25-year-old man that left him cut and bruised.

The incident happened in Woodham, Newton Aycliffe, between 11pm and 11.30pm on Sunday.

The victim, who is 6ft 5in, was on his way home from a barbecue at Woodham Golf and Country Club, where he had been since about 3.30pm that day.

As he turned the corner into Woodham Way, he was pounced on by a group of at least three men and one woman.

He ended up on the floor where members of the group started kicking him.

He remembers one person saying "you're not with your posh friends now," or words to that effect.

The woman then told the other attackers he had had enough.

The man picked himself up and ran off, without looking back.

He suffered a cut above his right eyebrow and bumps and bruises all over his body.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC Chris Bonham at Newton Aycliffe Police on (01325) 314401.
