NEW zones banning the consumption of alcohol in public are in force in a North-East city.
Sunderland City Council has made an order extending the areas previously covered by existing by-laws ban in the city centre and the sea front.
It will become an offence in the designated areas to consume alcohol in a public place after being told by a police officer to stop drinking.
Offenders will be liable to a fine of up to £500 and can be arrested if they fail to give up alcohol when requested by a police officer.
The order includes all parks, playgrounds and cemeteries; an area surrounding the Stadium of Light; Downhill Shopping Precinct; part of Grangetown and Hendon and part of Washington Village.
Warning signs have been erected advising people they are in a designated area.
