THE region is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, figures showed last night.

Researchers found the number of visitors to the region rose during the winter.

More than half the businesses questioned by regional development agency One NorthEast had seen more visitors during the period compared with last year.

Sixty-three per cent of businesses saw more trade between last October and March this year.

A One NorthEast spokeswoman said: "One NorthEast will continue promoting the region as a year-round destination, through a series of campaigns, exhibitions and national Press visits planned for 2004 to 2005."

The survey was carried out by One NorthEast's tourism team and canvassed more than 3,200 visitor attractions, accommodation providers and tourism businesses.

Many said good weather led to an increase in business, and 53 per cent expected visitor numbers to increase during the next six months compared with the same period last year.

It is one of four quarterly surveys that will be conducted by One NorthEast.

John Litherland, director of delivery at One NorthEast, said: "This demonstrates the increasing popularity of the region as an all-year-round visitor destination.

"Our Spring campaign, which has already generated over 4,000 requests for the region-wide visitor guide, aims to build on this and ensure that the lead-up to summer is equally prosperous for our tourism businesses."
