PLANS are under way for a book paying tribute to women who worked in a North-East munitions factory during the Second World War.

The Northern Echo's community web editor, Andrew Hutton, has been extensively researching the history of the Aycliffe Angels and the Aycliffe Royal Ordnance Factory.

He is writing a book which he hopes will be published next year to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the end of the war.

As part of his research, Mr Hutton has built an Aycliffe Angels website which he hopes will become a valuable information resource.

It is also intended to be a platform for former munitions workers, family and friends to exchange contacts and information. The website can be visited at www.aycliffeangels.org.uk.

Mr Hutton manages the Echo's community web platform, Communigate, which offers individuals, small groups, clubs and societies the opportunity to build a free website.

He has used the Communigate service to construct the Aycliffe Angels website and is delighted with the response the site has received so far.

Now he is hoping that anyone with original photographs, documents, maps, diagrams, pass cards, magazine cuttings and any other items which refer to the Aycliffe factory and its workers will get in touch.

He is hoping to include as many items as possible in the forthcoming book and on the website.

Mr Hutton can be contacted at the Communigate office in Darlington on (01325) 505270.
