Newton Cap successfully came through a nerve-racking penalty shoot-out to complete a Division Three league and cup double on Sunday.

Having already sewn-up the divisional title they faced Goodfellas at Darlington RA's Brinkburn Road ground knowing victory would mean they would emulate Peppers DS who achieved the honour 12 months ago.

And after 120 minutes of play which ended 1-1, Bishop Auckland-based Newton Cap held their nerve to triumph over their mid-table opponents and go into next season's Division Two with two pieces of silverware in the trophy cabinet.

Having dropped off the pace in the championship race in the last couple of months, and ultimately missed out on promotion too, for Goodfellas the final was their only chance of silverware and they started brightly as some neat passing play caused havoc in the Newton Cap defence.

This pressure was rewarded on 25 minutes when the Newton Aycliffe side's Emrhys Sheldon crossed to Mark Corry who turned and hit a shot low to the keeper's right from close range.

But Newton Cap responded almost instantly with a well taken goal from just inside the area by Keith Hirst and the score remained 1-1 at the break.

The second half was a more scrappy affair with both sides starting to look nervous. As a result the game went into extra time but that failed to produce a winner and it was no surprise that the game went to penalties.

Newton Cap were prolific from 12 yards, converting their four spot-kicks while Goodfellas' Corry and Shaun Falconer both failed to hit the net, thus handing the Cap the Division Three Cup trophy.

Goodfellas were left disappointed but believe they will come back a stronger team next year and say they have shown in spells they can play football that can match any team in the League.
