VIOLENCE erupted on the streets of a North Yorkshire city after a man went into a pub looking for those responsible for damaging his stepfather's car, magistrates were told yesterday.

Harrogate magistrates heard that Ian Butler and a friend were in the Lamb and Flag, in High Skellgate, Ripon, when Terrance Sharpe accussed them of smashing a car window.

Michael Hammond, prosecuting, said Butler, 22, followed Mr Sharpe out of the pub and a fight broke out between them and two other men, during which Mr Sharpe was punched in the head.

When police arrived Butler turned his aggression on them and officers had to use CS gas to subdue him.

Butler, of King Edward Road, Ripon, pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour and resisting police. But a second threatening behaviour charge and one of assault on Mr Sharpe were dropped. He was fined £200 with £110 costs.

Andrew Tinning, in mitigation, said Butler, who had been having a quiet drink, felt he was being accused of a crime he had not committed.
