A MAN who took his sister's car after a drinking binge and crashed it into a house was ordered to join a drink impaired drivers' programme yesterday.

Gavin Mannion, 20, drank six pints of lager before he grabbed the keys to the Volkswagen Polo from his sister's home where he was living.

The factory worker was driving too fast in Cumberland Road, Middlesbrough, when the car skidded, bounced off the wall of a house and careered into the back of a Nissan car, said John Elvidge, prosecuting.

Mannion, who had not passed his driving test, tried to run away but he was held until police arrived, Teesside Crown Court was told.

He could hardly stand and he was reeking of alcohol and a blood test showed that he was more than twice over the alcohol limit.

Mannion, of Canberra Road, Marton, Middlesbrough, admitted it was a stupid mistake.

He was disqualified for two years with a two year community rehabilitation order including the drink impaired drivers' programme after he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol on February 29, without a licence and insurance, and aggravated vehicle taking.
