SOME of the biggest names in high street fashion are preparing to move to Europe's largest indoor shopping complex.

The Red Mall, at the Gateshead MetroCentre, opens on October 6. Alongside the flagship 180,000sq ft Debenhams department store will be fashion chains H&M, Zara, River Island and New Look.

Centre owner Capital Shopping Centres pushed through the £85m expansion to meet retailers' requirements.

John Abel, managing director of Capital Shopping Centres, said: "We are delighted that the new Red Mall has been able to meet the requirement of retailers for large format stores.

"We are now virtually fully let and when it opens on October 6th this year, MetroCentre will have an additional department store, a wider fashion choice and new facilities to add to its already comprehensive retail offer."

The extension will increase the centre's retail area to about 1,780,000sq ft, restoring its position as Europe's largest shopping centre.

The project will also create a 1,100 space car park, public transport interchange and road and infrastructure improvements.
