Wynyard Veterans defeated North Shields Spring Gardens 2-1 to win the Ironside Cup (Division Two) and have a great chance of achieving a double.

They will be Division Two champions if they draw or win when they play Hebburn away this Saturday as they have a superior goal difference to the present league leaders Red House WMC. Both these teams along with Gateshead Greencroft have gained promotion, but Saturday's match decides who are the champions.

Hylton Castle could only draw 2-2 at home to Red House and consequently lost out on promotion, finishing in fourth spot.

Billingham Town eased their relegation worries by winning 5-1 against the Willow Pond, who have never recovered from losing two of their star players early in the season. They started with only eight players. After Jimmy Faith had put Billingham ahead, another player arrived to make it nine. Faith then scored again and a second player arrived to make it ten. Tony Screen made it 3-0 at the interval. To their credit the Willow Pond never gave up trying and Evans did pull one back but further goals from Wilson and Twizzell made it 5-1 to Billingham despite the Pond's gallant effort. In Division Three Houghton Cricket Club and British Telecom have won promotion and Hedworthfield will be promoted if they draw their last game which is away to Hartlepool RNC. Telecom's last game is away to the Toll Bar. As Houghton CC have played all their games the championship could be won by either Telecom or Hedworthfield. A win from both these sides would see BT as champions, Hedworthfield runners up and Houghton in third spot, draws would see BT champions. The side who can miss out are Crook Town, who fluffed their chances when they drew 1-1 away to Houghton Cricket Club. David Neil gave them the lead and Crook should have gone 2-0 up but Neils spot kick hit the post and then rebounded off the other post and was cleared to safety. Chapman levelled for Houghton shortly before the interval and with no further goals coming after the restart Houghton won promotion and Crook can only hope Hedworthfield lose their last game.

Durham C Strollers finished seventh, the last two games resulted in their scoring 13 goals and only conceding two, which augurs well for next season.

In Division IV Peterlee have a great chance of achieving the double, they are Division IV champions and they play Trimdon Veterans in the Billy Lorraine Cup Final, but Trimdon will be all out to beat the new champions

Thornley Celtic and Pennywell Comrades are also promoted. In The Kenny Ball Cup Quarter Final Ferryhill Greyhound defeated Norton Stockton 2-0 and now meet Wardley Green in the semi-final.

Steels Social Club, Premier Division unbeaten champions are also looking for a double, they play Holywell Fat Ox in the other semi final this Saturday at Silksworth Colliery Welfare ground, 10.30am.
